The concept of earned media is really powerful because it means that media outlets including journalists, tv, radio, bloggers and vloggers (video bloggers) are talking about you, and likely including a link to your website. In truth, this is how the “big boys” do it. People like Richard Branson and Elon Musk are known around the world, not for being rich, but because they have been very successful doing things that have drawn massive attention… and that massive attention has always been smartly focused on the launch of a product of service… the attention drives sales and that’s how they became so incredibly rich!
Marketing stunts are not a new concept, but it takes just the right amounts of originality, creativity and reckless abandon to really pull one off. The first two components, originality and creativity are absolutely key. You are not going to get massive attention participating following in someone else’s footsteps. Therefore, if you want to create a viral sensation, you have to think outside the box. Researching some brilliant marketing stunts that have gone viral before you can possibly provide some inspirational spark… but you would be well served to get a group of creative minds together (perhaps for a few drinks) and just get weird brainstorming ideas for marketing stunts.

Lastly, if you can’t really think of something wildly original, engaging or exciting… you can always create some sort of competition with a noteworthy prize (the more outlandish and strangely random the better), start some sort of charitable cause or even a scholarship.
Once you think of your big idea… promote the crap out of it with Press Releases and Social Media… and if you’ve come up with the right thing, be prepared for lift off!
